This project is all about colours and colour matching.  Read the guided observations below so that you can be clear about what can be expected from children of different age groups in terms of their understanding of ‘colours’.

Print off the rainbow template. Cut out squares of construction paper and see if the children can correctly match the coloured squares onto the coloured spaces. The clouds are made of cotton wool.

Can the children match the correct colour square onto the mosaic template? Do they know the names of the colours?

What to look for on this project:

16-26 months Can young children correctly match the colours, even if they don’t know the names of the colours?
22-36 months Can the children name the colours? Which is their favourite colour? Can they match them correctly?
30-60 months How well can the child identify the colours? Which do they get right? Which do they get wrong?   Which is their favourite colour?
