From the moment of birth, and even before, humans are designed to be social creatures. Babies and very young children are first drawn to their caregivers as a source of nurture and comfort and a little later to other children and adults as they explore their social world, their place within it and the rules that govern it. There is lots to learn and social rules can be puzzling for little children to understand at first, especially as rules can vary from place to place. Supportive and understanding adults should help guide children through the ups and downs of learning about themselves and how and where they fit in with other people and society.
