Burn’s Night is celebrated on the famous Scottish poet Robert Burns’ birthday: 25 January. Burns night suppers take place around the world and tend to be more widely observed in Scotland than the official national day: St. Andrew’s Day.

Learn some Scottish songs with children

Here are the words to two well-known Scottish songs. If you are unfamiliar with the tunes you can find lots of examples of the songs being sung on sites like YouTube. Why not listen to some with the children and have a go at learning some of the words?

Wild Mountain Thyme

O the summer time has come,
And the trees are sweetly blooming,
And wild mountain thyme,
Grows around the purple heather.
Will ye go, lassie, go?

Chorus:
And we’ll all go together,
To pull wild mountain thyme,
All around the purple heather.
Will ye go, lassie, go?

Bonnie Banks o’ Loch Lomond

By yon bonnie banks and by yon bonnie braes,
Where the sun shines bright on Loch Lomon’.
Where me and my true love were ever wont to gae,
On the bonnie, bonnie banks o’ Loch Lomon’.

Chorus:
O ye’ll tak’ the high road and I’ll tak’ the low road,
An’ I’ll be in Scotland afore ye;
But me and my true love will never meet again,
On the bonnie, bonnie banks o’ Loch Lomon’.
